February Gardening Advice
February is a cold month, but the promise of spring is just around the corner. It is a good time for some 'armchair' gardening, or for the hardy there are still jobs that can be done.
Consider pruning winter flowering shrubs such as hamamelis once they have finished flowering. This is to keep them tidy and compact for the new season. Wisteria vines can also be pruned now, by cutting side shoots to two or three buds.
Fruit trees are starting to blossom and if the weather turns bad then it is worth protecting them from cold, wind and frost with horticultural fleece.
Rhubarb can be forced under a terracotta pot. The plants should now be starting to show. Potatoes can be chitted in a cool, frost-free room. February is a good time to have a general clean-up of the garden and greenhouse in readiness for the coming season.
Snowdrops can be divided after they have flowered but do this while the leaves are still green. Spread around the garden for a greater show next year.
Plant lily bulbs and roses now. Broad beans can be planted. Mulch or manure can be added to the garden.
Don't forget the birds. They are still hungry. We have a wide range of food suitable for all garden birds. Keep the tables and water bowls clean, ice free and food topped up.
When the weather turns bad, armchair gardening is just the thing! Plan your garden, choose any plants, and seeds you require for the new season, nip to the garden centre for ideas and dream of warmer weather!
Enjoy the preparation and planning!
