Happy New Year! Here is hoping that it is a good one for you and your garden. While the weather isn't always that inviting at this time of the year, getting some fresh air to blow away winters cobwebs is always a good idea. And there is always something you can be doing in the garden to keep warm!
Feed the birds! While winter has been fairly mild to date, once the cold weather arrives as it always does, the birds need extra help finding food. Keep feeding areas clean, give them fresh water and healthy food. We have a wide range of feeds and feeders in stock to suit most garden birds. January is also a good time to clean out bird boxes ready for spring.
Weed! Why are weeds always the strongest plants in the garden? They never seem to stop! While weeding, try and stay off cultivated ground, so that it does not become compacted. Use a board to stand on to distribute your weight.
Super keen vegetable growers could cover their patch with black polythene, to help raise the soil temperature ready for an early start. It has the added benefit of keeping pesky weeds supressed too.
Many deciduous trees can be pruned now. Cut back dead wood, open up the tree to allow air flow. Don't get too carried away though, and always use sharp, clean secateurs. Check ties and stakes to ensure they are firm but not restricting the plant. Help younger trees by adding a stake and tie. This will help protect them from wind damage.
Keep the temperature in your greenhouse above 5 degrees if you are overwintering plants. Use bubblewrap to insulate the greenhouse or use a heater. Get your electric propogator ready for action soon.
Seeds will be back in the shop soon, so January is a good time to plan the garden and get stocked up.
